What is Direct Access?
- In New York State you can have access to a physical therapist for evaluation and treatment in physical therapy for up to 10 sessions or 30 days without a prescription from a physician.
- If you have already been seen by a physical therapist for the same injury within the same year you can even be seen for another initial examination without a prescription to determine if another course of physical therapy might be necessary.
Simply stated, the sooner an injury is treated, the sooner it will recover. Having Direct Access to a physical therapist results in a shorter course of injury. Quicker access to skilled management of most orthopedic disorders leads to a quicker resolution of pain, spasm, swelling, and inflammation. With a shorter acute phase of injury you can begin to restore normal mobility and strength to your joints and muscles much earlier. This leads to a quicker return back to work, sports, and life. Time and time again having Direct Access has shown to be the more cost-effective option when compared to the typical medical model of management of many orthopedic injuries. This means less out-of-pocket expense to you with today’s high deductible insurance plans.
